Reimbursement FAQ's

For credentials to be classified as certifications, employers may be reimbursed for both tuition costs paid to a training provider and assessment costs paid to a testing center or certifying body. Employers will list both entities on the application and submit proof of payment for both costs.

Example: Company ABC is working with College XYZ to sponsor employees to take a CompTIA A+ preparation course. Company ABC may request reimbursement for payments made to College XYZ and to the testing center where employees took the CompTIA A+ certification. 

In response to potential workforce disruptions created by COVID-19, TechCred will allow employers to substitute employees listed in an application approved before June 2020. Improvements are being made to the reimbursement portal to allow employers to enter employee substitutions; while those improvements are being made, you can email techcred@development.ohio.gov about employee substitutions. Beginning with the June 2020 application round, individual employee information will not be collected until employers submit for reimbursement.

TechCred may be packaged with other Federal or State funding opportunities to cover unmet costs of training and credentialing. Funding may not be used to reimburse training costs that are being reimbursed by another State or Federal training program.

After an employee completes a credential, the process to submit for reimbursement is quick and easy. Businesses will login to TechCred.Ohio.Gov and upload:

  • Proof of credential completion
  • Proof of payment
  • Invoices for costs incurred
  • Information about employees wages at the time of submission

Employers are eligible to be reimbursed up to $2,000 per credential. Beginning with the June 2020 application round, TechCred will allow an employer to be reimbursed for multiple credentials earned by a single employee from the same application round. TechCred encourages participants to take advantage of this capability to earn complimentary and/or stackable credentials.

Employers may be reimbursed for tuition, lab fees, manuals, textbooks and certification costs, up to $2,000.

Each employer is eligible to receive up to $30,000 per application period.

Example: Company A applied and was awarded $30,000 in potential reimbursements in October 2019. Company A is eligible for an additional $30,000 in January 2020 and each subsequent round.

In order to receive reimbursement, employers must submit documentation within six (6) weeks of an employee completing a credential. Credentials must be less than 12 months in length and training must start on or after the first day of the month immediately following the last application period, and must be completed within 12 months (the Effective Date and the End Date of the Agreement).
